Shimano BL-MT63 Deore II cantilever brake levers

Shimano BL-MT63 Deore II cantilever brake levers

These two pairs of Shimano cantilever brakes are the original high-performance brakes of the 80′ies before low profile brakes became the norm.

As you can see one pair is in black the other is in silver, originally the Deore XT group was available in two colors, hubs, seatpost and cranks came in either black or silver IIRC.

These brakes inspired the likes of Grafton to machine low profile brakes that did not stick out as much on the sides as non low profile cantilever brakes did. With the success of Grafton Speed Controller high end brakes Shimano made their own version of the low profile cantilever and these brakes where phased out and non low profile brakes became obsolete in the MTB world.

But that did not mean they became less attractive since Shimano Deore brakes found a niche use in cross racing where non low profile brakes where sought after and worked better with brake levers on drop bars.

The worst part is getting the pads aligned right to stop the shreaking “here comes a retro rider” noise. I’m still running these on my old commuter bike, but it’s getting hard to find good cantilever pads. A local importer took pity on me and sent me two sets of Koolstop Eagle Claws for free, sweet!
