The silver brake is a Shimano BR-MT62 Deore II cantilever brake, the black brake is a Shimano BR-M732 Deore XT cantilever brake. As you notice, the parts number is different even though the only difference is the color, black and silver.
Actually the silver brake is from an older group set I think and the black cantilever brake is from the Deore XT group. The really old Shimano Deore XT group (not as old as the famous deer head XT group) had some components available in either black or silver, such as crank arms, hubs and cantilever brakes.
But anyways, brakes are the same dimensions, only difference is color.
These early non low profile cantilever brakes are actually really good, they are relatively easy to set up and offer good power and plenty of mud clearance, I heard some rumors years ago the non low profile Shimano Deore XT cantilever brakes are still used by cyclocross teams today, I don’t know if that rumor holds up anymore but somehow in the cyclocross world, non low profile cantilever brakes are de facto standard.
So I should mention condition of these brakes, well they have been used to be honest with you, but with most of the oldschool stuff from Shimano, these are the kind of components that will hold up and perform year after year. You would think 20 year old black MTB brakes would look flakey and worn but not these, they look worn but the color have survived surprisingly well.
And then we have a little surprise. Yes, there is a third brake here too, the golden one. This is also a BR-MT62 version of the Shimano cantilever brake and I guess you are wondering if it is some kind of Shimano special version.
-I dont know, I originally had two pair of the golden brakes, but one set where lost 10 years ago. I think these are definitely gold plated at home but I am fairly sure it is not actual gold. The plating are beginning to bubble in some places but mechanically these golden cantilever brakes are still in nice condition. However they are only supplied as spares since they are missing a vital part needed to get them to work – that little washer inside the right brake with which you can adjust the tension of the spring. So if you can track down that missing part you have a unique Shimano cantilever brake.
I will throw in two wires also so you do not have to mess with straddle wire hangers.
The silver and black cantilever brake, including the golden brake (supplied as spare part) is for sale for total price of 35 euro what a bargain.
