Shimano ST-M091 RapidFire brake shift lever

Shimano ST-M091 RapidFire brake shift lever

Much can be said about these Shimano Deore XT RapidFire brake and shift levers. They are the precesors to the RapidFire plus shifters and where hot debate back in the day if they where such a better shifter than a thumbshifter.

Racers used these so MTB enthusiasts assumed they where good as most Shimano XT parts where, then some people claimed they where bad in that you could not shift as easily with these RapidFire shifters as with a good thumbshifters. And they where more heavy than thumbshifters, and more complex, and they did not have that important friction mode.

So what was good about them?

You could have a steady grip around the handlebars at all times even when shifting, not possible with thumbshifters (and that was about it I think).

Still this is a nice piece of MTB history. And that Deore XT logo on the shifters looks so cool under the handlebars.

Slightly worn, I let these go for 20 Euro, I think  I have the right rubber hose around somewhere here too.SOLD

Hi, I’m assuming these are gone. Can you tell me if this style of below-the-bar, thumb-only shifters were ever made separate from the brake lever?

    Many thanks!

No, they are not gone! :)

Many have been interested but mostly guys from US, since shipping is a tad too expensive for sending these to US (they weight around 4-500 grams) so most have backed out of the deal.
